Matariki Tupu Hou
We are dedicated to fostering the richness of Tikanga Māori within the Upper Clutha communities. Our name, “Matariki Tupu Hou,” reflects our essence: “Matariki,” the Māori New Year marked by the Pleiades star cluster, symbolising renewal and celebration, and “Tupu Hou,” meaning “new growth,” representing our commitment to nurturing fresh opportunities for learning, connection, and cultural pride.

About US

Welcome to Matariki Tupu Hou, a vibrant charitable organisation rooted in the heart of Wanaka, New Zealand. Established in 2008, we are dedicated to fostering the richness of Tikanga Māori (Māori customs and traditions) within the Upper Clutha communities.

At Matariki Tupu Hou, we believe that culture is a living, breathing force that binds us together. Our work centres on education, arts, heritage, and community development, with a deep focus on promoting Māori language (te reo Māori), traditions, and values. Based at 116a Mount Iron Drive, Wanaka, we serve as a hub for whānau (families), tamariki (children), and the wider community, creating spaces where everyone can engage with Māori culture in meaningful ways.

Matariki Tupu Hou is more than an organisation; it’s a movement to uplift and empower. Whether through wananga (traditional learning workshops), kapa haka (Māori performing arts), or pōwhiri (welcoming ceremonies), we strive to weave Māori heritage into the fabric of Wanaka’s diverse community. Our doors—and hearts—are open to all, from young learners to kaumātua (elders), as we build bridges of understanding and pride.
